Staff and students vote for Les Varendes

Wednesday 15 February 2023

From September, the Guernsey Grammar School will be known as Les Varendes High School after a referendum of staff and students chose that name over St Andrews High School.

The final group of students to have sat the 11+ exam are doing their GCSEs this summer so there will no longer be any States run schools with students selected on ability.

Once the current Year 11 students have left the Grammar School the site will be renamed Les Varendes High School, from September 2023.

Although the site has been known as Les Varendes High School on occasion during the ongoing discussions over the reorganisation of secondary education, the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture asked students and staff what they wanted it to be called.

Students from La Mare de Carteret High School will be merged into Les Varendes High with the former due to close in July 2025. The two will be fully merged as one 11-16 school ahead of the new year starting in September that year.

Staff and students at both were given two choices - Les Varendes High School and St Andrew’s High School. Both suggestions were chosen to ensure the new school’s name is geographical and will align with the island's two other secondary schools; Les Beaucamps High and St Sampson’s High.

Of all the staff and students across the Grammar School and La Mare de Carteret, 518 voted with 56.9% choosing Les Varendes High School.
