St Sampsons High sports hall plagued by leak

Investigations are ongoing after St Sampson’s sports hall was put out of community use by a water leak.

The facility is used not just by the school but three other sports groups in the evenings with the issue first arising after Storm Ciaran early in November.

Users were told a leak had caused the floor to lift and the surface was left wet and slippery.

“The space was dried out following Storm Ciaran and put back in use but unfortunately, following another recent period of exceptional wind and rain further water ingress has occurred,” a States Property Unit spokesperson said.

“SPU have commissioned a local roofing company to carry out further investigative works.

“School use of the hall has been prioritised and maintained following a suitable Health and Safety assessment.”

Three community sports have had to go elsewhere.

“Alternative arrangements have been made available at La Mare de Carteret Secondary School.”

Sports facilities have been in the spotlight after the States dropped a new sports hall from its immediate plans for Les Ozouets campus development.

The need for a facility that can be used by volleyball, netball and basketball was identified more than a decade ago as the current options lack suitable runoff and spectator space.
