The Channel Islands Coop and Guernsey Post have decided to close down the Post Office located within Coop’s Market Street store.
It will shut on Friday 12 April.
Mark Cox, CEO of Channel Islands Coop, said: “As a Society, we take immense pride in supporting our communities and have always recognised the vital role post offices play within local areas. We have discussed various options with Guernsey Post and, have come to the joint decision to close Market Street Post Office.”
All staff affected by the closure have been reassigned within the business.
In response to the impending closure, Boley Smillie, Guernsey Post CEO, unveiled plans to extend and improve the retail counter in the Tourist Information building.
“It is essential that we retain a Post Office in town for the benefit of our local community,” he said.
Further adjustments announced include the ending of the EBOX Parcel Collection service at Market Street on 12 April, though PO Boxes at Market Street will temporarily remain until a suitable alternative is identified.
CI Coop’s remaining post offices in St Sampson and St Martin will continue operations albeit with reduced opening hours. Starting 15 April, these locations will be available from 09:00 to 15:00 Monday to Friday, and 09:00 to 12:00 on Saturdays.
The announcement brings to a close a three-year tenure of CI Coop managing the Market Street Post Office.
