Sketch writer and caricaturist join forces

Friday 08 November 2024

A new book sees a political sketch writer and artist join forces to offer caricatures of our deputies - coincidentally being promoted as they debate the 2025 Budget under increasing financial pressure.

Since his retirement as a People’s Deputy in 2020, Richard Graham’s parliamentary sketches have provided a light- hearted, sometimes irreverent, commentary on what our elective representatives get up to in government.

Now, he and artist Ross Le Brun, have worked together on 'You Couldn’t Make It Up!' – a published collection of the last year’s worth of these sketches.

Mr Graham said: "The collection is meant to be taken light-heartedly as a mixture of mildly mischievous observations with the occasional serious point behind them. Governing our island is of course a serious matter, but I think that there should be room for a bit of fun in our politics, too.

"The book also includes a collection of brand new caricatures from Ross Le Brun, especially commissioned for this publication."

Mr Le Brun is an emerging Guernsey artist, added Mr Graham. He started the Guernsey Chalk Art Festival, won the Guernsey Press Arts Contribution Award and is now "the premier Channel Islands caricaturist".

"I’m so glad I was asked to illustrate Richard’s sketches because it's something that really got me interested! I love opportunities like this!," said Mr Le Brun.

"There’s a lot of material to work with from this term’s debates. Like seriously, loads! My aim is to make you laugh - even if you don’t follow politics you’ll find my cartoons fun. You can see more of my art on my Facebook page 'Dad Makes Stuff' - I am open to any opportunities for illustrating, cartooning, caricaturing; murals, sculpting, or sketching!"

Proceeds from the book - published by Blue Ormer - will be donated to the Guernsey Cheshire Home.

You Couldn’t Make It Up! will be available from 18 November in local shops including The Lexicon, Writer’s Block, Guernsey Museum, Cadeaux, Folk Museum, and Sula Gallery – as well as online from blueormer.gg.
