Shop, pub, flats and offices planned for Pollet

Monday 11 March 2019

New plans have been submitted for the redevelopment of Weighbridge House which could see a pub reopen in the lower Pollet.

While planning permission was previously given for the ground floor and basement to be reconfigured as one retail unit, that expired in January as work hadn't started.

Last week, plans were submitted again for Weighbridge House, which offer a new outlook for the building.

The building which stretches from the former White Hart pub near the Weighbridge Taxi Rank to where Miss Nob clothes shop used to be, also used to contain a nightclub, a sandwich shop and numerous offices. Some of the offices upstairs are still occupied and the Food Hall is still open but will soon close so it can be redeveloped as a Morrisons Daily.

The new planning application includes a request for permission to alter part of the basement and ground floors of the building to use for retail and as a public house.

The first and second floors could be repurposed for future use as flats and offices while the roof could also be altered for additional floor space. The external appearance of the building could change to with a request to change the shop fronts and fenestration.

It's likely planning permission will be given as the request is similar to the one approved in January 2016 which saw permission granted for the ground floor and basement to be altered into one retail space.

Because work hadn't started within three years, that permission expired in January 2019. The businesses within Weghbridge House have nearly all closed or relocated though, either as their leases have expired - in the case of Barbados Nightclub and the White Hart pub, or because their owners have retired, as with Miss Nob.

It means there are a number of empty buildings in a prominent part of St Peter Port.

Express has previously approached the owners of the building, Spread Trustee Ltd, who did not reply, and also the architects behind the planning application, who declined to comment at that time.
