Seven half marathons in seven days

Monday 08 February 2021

A secondary school teacher has taken on the challenge of running seven half marathons in seven days to raise money for charities struggling due to the pandemic.

Matt Jamieson, 44, only started running two years ago, with two half marathons and the Guernsey Marathon on his record to date.

Undaunted by suggestions that his challenge might be "a bit too ambitious", the father-of-three came up with the idea in order to raise money for the Social Investment Fund, which distributes a combination of public and private funds to charities in need.

"When I heard the States of Guernsey were resurrecting the Covid-19 Community Charity Appeal, run by the Social Investment Fund to support our amazing charity sector, I decided I would really like to help," he said.

"I started running just over two years ago and I have completed two half marathon races and the recent Guernsey Marathon. Some people think I am being a bit too ambitious."

Starting yesterday, the plan is to run a half marathon each morning, finishing on Saturday 13 February.

Not only does he need to complete each run within two hours to stay within the permitted exercise time, he is now having to contend with Storm Darcy, which has been dubbed 'Beast from the East 2'.

No matter the challenge, he is determined to reach his goal.

"I want to raise money for our diverse charity sector, often referred to as the third sector as it does so much for our community.

"Last time the appeal raised money for a wide range of charities. From caring for the most vulnerable in society, Animal welfare groups to sporting and other volunteer groups. Hopefully it will be just as successful this time in supporting our charities and I aim to do my bit."

Sadie Siviter de Paucar, Lead Officer for the Social Investment Fund, commended Mr Jamieson for his efforts.

“We are delighted that Matt has chosen to support the Covid-19 Community Charity Appeal with his ambitious 7 half marathons in 7 days and wish him the best of luck," she said.

"Local charities play a vital role in our islands supporting many people who could not cope without their help, especially at this difficult time, yet for many charities fund raising has become increasingly difficult and they need our support”.
