It is the Committee’s ambition at this stage - having worked closely with Public Health in designing the plans - for all students to return to school, college and early years settings over a one to two week period following the island’s move to Stage 2.

Guernsey is entering Stage 1 today, however no date has been set yet for the island’s move to Stage 2, which is expected to be a minimum of two weeks away.

When schools do open their doors again to all students, there will be numerous precautionary measures in place, many of which students will be familiar with from last year. 

These will include class or year group bubbles, and staggered start and finish times. Also included will be a reduced school transport system, a Public Health-developed testing strategy, while face coverings will be 'strongly recommended' for adults and secondary-age students.

When we move to Stage 3, some of the measures will be dropped and others adapted under current plans. Face coverings will remain recommended in communal areas (outside of class bubbles), sites will be cleaned regularly and there will be a continuing emphasis on hygiene and respecting other people's personal space. 

However transport and school days are likely to return to normal and there is unlikely to be a need for social distancing.

Currently, schools and pre-schools are open only for vulnerable students by invitation and for some children of essential workers.
