School pupils "at risk" if drivers avoid diversions

As work continues along Vale Road, a number of drivers are continuing to use through roads, avoiding the official diversions in the area.

The States of Guernsey's Traffic and Highways Services team says that is "increasing the risk to the many students of nearby schools and playgroups" as well as adding to congestion.

The busy road has been closed since the end of October and is due to reopen at the end of February.

Guernsey Water is working, with contractors Geomarine, to improve drainage in the area around St Sampson's Harbour. This includes replacing sewers and manholes. 

That is said to be progressing well and the excavation work is currently being carried out near the junction of Delancey Lane. This means the junction of Delancey Lane and Vale Road is blocked and drivers can't exit from Delancey Lane into Vale Road.

A diversion route has been in place throughout the duration of the works and all drivers are now being asked to stick to that. Traffic and Highways Services says anyone attempting to bypass the works by using other roads including Pointes Rocques and Robergerie Lane is simply adding to the existing congestion in the area around Delancey park while also "increasing the risk to the many students of nearby schools and playgroups".
