Sark to represent Bailiwick

Saturday 12 November 2022

A Sark Conseiller will lay a wreath at the Cenotaph in London tomorrow, on behalf of the people of the Bailiwick.

The Crown Dependencies have been represented at the national event on Remembrance Sunday since 2019.

This is the first time someone other than a politician from Guernsey has placed a wreath.

The first time the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man were included in the national event, Deputy Gavin St Pier - then Chief Minister - placed the wreath.

Since the 2020 election, and Deputy Peter Ferbrache's election to the senior political role locally, he has had the honour.

This year, Conseiller John Guille, a member of Sark's Chief Pleas and the Chairman of the island's Policy and Finance Committee will place the Bailiwick's wreath.

He will be announced by commentators and referenced in any official documentation as the 'Chief Minister of the Government of Sark'. That moniker has been settled on to ensure understanding of his role outside of the islands.

Conseiller Guille said: “Having one grandparent who lived through the occupation on Sark, and another who was deported to internment camps on the continent, it is a great honour to represent the Bailiwick at this important event.”

The national commemoration at the Cenotaph will be televised tomorrow morning.
