Chief Pleas has finally commented on a ‘visioning exercise’ undertaken by the Prince’s Foundation, following an event this week where the Foundation sought insight from Sark’s community.
The Foundation is a charity set up by King Charles III and it works to create and develop communities through training programmes, engineering and hospitality, while realising certain town planning and sustainable living ideals.
It was invited into the island by the Sark Property Company, of which the island’s Seigneur, Christopher Beaumont, is a director. The aim is to plan out a clear future for Sark and address perceived aesthetic and infrastructure issues in the island.
The intention to bring the Foundation over to the island was made two weeks ago and the island’s government – Chief Pleas – has stayed quiet on the invitation, despite being intrinsically tied to any changes the island might face.
Express reached out to Chief Pleas several times last week and were told that Conseillers would comment on the initiative after better understanding the Foundation’s intention.
A meeting was held on Monday (24 April) with representatives from the Foundation and the island’s community, where, it’s understood, most of the membership of Chief Pleas attended.

Following that event and after another request from Express, Chief Pleas has finally decided to comment on the initiative.
The Chairman, John Guille, and Deputy Chairman, Pippa Donovan, of Police & Finance said:
“It was encouraging to see good attendance from Islanders to what may be the beginning of a potentially very useful piece of work by a respected foundation.
“Overwhelming concern was expressed by islanders that this should not be linked to any commercial interests, though we have every faith that the Princes Foundation are experienced professionals and well positioned toestablish this separation.
“We were all pleased to learn that this is just the beginning of the process and look forward to the preliminary report this Summer when the Prince’s Foundation will be able to devoteconsiderably more time to engage with the entire community.”
