Sark could complete the set of Channel Islands declaring public holidays for the upcoming Royal visit, if politicians back the idea.
The island’s Policy & Finance Committee will seek the approval of Chief Pleas next week to create an extra public holiday to mark the historic occasion, with The King and Queen Consert due to visit Jersey and Guernsey on 15 and 16 June.
Chief Pleas meet on 3 July.
It’s asking for a day off to be declared on 16 July, coinciding with the visit to the other islands in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, which have already announced a public holiday.
Jersey’s States approved a public holiday just this week ahead of their visit.
Both Sark and Jersey require the approval of parliament to declare public holidays, but Guernsey recently handed those powers to the Committee for Economic Development, which decided the 16 July should be freed up for “an historic occasion and a cause for celebration”.
Alderney quickly followed Guernsey in announcing a plan, and it too needs to be signed off by politicians on 10 July.
On this occasion, Their Majesties will only set foot on Jersey and Guernsey but representatives of both Alderney and Sark have been invited to join in with events in St Peter Port.
More details about the visit will be revealed soon.
