Christmas Eve permit for Santa

Wednesday 15 December 2021

Father Christmas has been granted a special permit to visit the Bailiwick overnight on Christmas Eve.

During the latest covid-19 public briefing, Dr Nicola Brink, the Medical Officer of Health, confirmed the paperwork had been finalised, giving Santa Claus more than a week's notice to prepare for the delivery of thousands of children's presents across the islands.

Dr Brink said the permit also covers Santa's reindeer.

As travel restrictions related to the pandemic are different this year, Dr Brink has issued a one-off 'Magical Travel Permit'.

The permit allows Father Christmas, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Donner, Blitzen, Vixen, Comet, Cupid and Rudolph to enter Bailiwick airspace and "deliver presents to all those who appear on the nice list".

Children who want to be on the "nice list" will need to be asleep before Father Christmas arrives. Other requirements for being on the "nice list" are known only to Santa himself, but a quick internet search suggests some tips.

They include simple things such as saying good morning to a stranger, holding a door open for someone and picking up litter left on the floor.

Dr Brink said the 'Magical Travel Permit' would allow Father Christmas to enter all properties on his list. At any properties where people are isolating or are poorly with symptoms of covid-19, he will take special measures to protect himself and prevent the spread of the virus.

"I've had a long chat with Father Christmas," said Dr Brink.

"He's well-versed in all covid precautions and he has been given what we have called a 'Magical Travel Permit' so that he can visit the Bailiwick for one night only on Christmas Eve.

"He can go to all the homes in the Bailiwick. He knows exactly what to do - so even if you're isolating or poorly, it's not a problem."
