Runway extension will be supported by States report

Wednesday 26 September 2018

A report being prepared on the island's transport links and the possibility of extending the runway is supportive of the idea in its draft versions, the President of Economic Development has confirmed.

PWC is currently producing the report for Economic Development and Policy & Resources, and Deputy Charles Parkinson said he and his committee would wait for the final version to be produced before officially supporting, or standing against, an extension to the runway.

But, during his speech in the States today, he said draft versions of the report they had seen were "supportive" of the idea.

"We are waiting for PWC to publish their final recommendation at this stage, but we have seen drafts and they seem to be supportive of a runway extension," he said.

"But there is not the necessary clarity of what the plans for the extension would be, and what type of extension would be ideal. Eitherway, this will be a major strategic step for Guernsey."

EasyJet

It is hoped by many Easy Jet could offer an alternative when it comes to air travel to and from Guernsey - others say the airline would be unlikely to come to the island, as it does to Jersey, even with a runway extension.

Following the endorsement by the States of the new transport licensing framework, Economic Development is in discussion with a number of commercial operators about the potential of said extension, which, it is hoped, would encourage these other operators to run flights to the island.

"It is clear that a decision on the future of Guernsey's runway will have an impact on these discussions, and there will be other factors that impact as well,' Deputy Parkinson added.

"The tender for the lifeline links public service obligation contracts will be issued shortly."

In his wider speech, Deputy Parkinson said transport connectivity was "absolutely central" to demonstrating Guernsey was open for business - the overall goal of his committee.

Speaking on sea links, he said his committee were in conversation with Condor on a continuing basis in the lead up to the company's potential sale. Plans are to currently be ready for any outcome, whether Condor is sold or not.

"Long term thinking is dependant on the long term physical infrastructure of the harbour, and that work is being prioritised by the Seafront Enhancement Area Working Party."
