Annual Rowathon highlights MS again

Sunday 03 February 2019

An annual fundraiser for the MS Society Guernsey is being held today, with rowers attempting to cover the equivalent distance of the Sark to Jersey race, while using static machines.

The Rowathon is a regular feature on the fundraising calendar. Organised by members of the Guernsey Rowing Club the event is seen as a hugely valued fund and awareness raiser for the MS Society, which in turn benefits around 150 people locally who suffer from the debilitating illness, and their families.

All of the money raised will go towards buying equipment and accessories for the patients, while also supporting research.

The event which starts at 11:00 today, will see up to 15 teams, with up to six people in each, rowing 30k in a relay on Concept Rowing machines.

While that is the equivalent of the distance of the Sark to Jersey race, they'll be doing it all on static machines in competition with each other. The event is held at Beau Sejour, with Kings loaning some of the machines to enable the rowathon to go ahead.

The idea is for each team member to row 1k at a time in rotation, so each person will cover 5k.

The organisers said; "it's an exacting but fun social event with a great mix of people participating.

"Finishing times vary between 1hr 48 and 2hours and 10 minutes - but everyone who participates is a winner with their effort and contribution to the well being of local MS sufferers."
