Repair work to start on piers

Monday 31 January 2022

Repair work begins this week on piers at Rousse and Portelet.

The works are part of the States' ongoing programme of coastal maintenance. They have been aligned with the spring tide to allow access for equipment and for the materials to set.

The pier at Rousse was battered by a storm in November last year. The piers at Portelet have multiple surface holes.

The piers are the responsibility of the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure.

“By being subjected to the relentless pressures imposed by the sea, Guernsey’s coastal infrastructure is constantly at risk of damage,” said the Committee.

“Stonemasons are contracted to carry out a programme of proactive maintenance works throughout the year to preserve the life of this infrastructure and reduce the risk of significant damage.

“Where damage does occur, an assessment is carried out by our engineers and repairs are prioritised, taking into account a number of factors, including: what they protect, their importance to island life and the need for repairs to be timed around favourable tides and weather.”

The public will still be able to access the piers.

The work should be finished by the end of the week unless disrupted by weather.
