Register now for the electoral roll

Anyone eligible to vote in the 2020 General Election can register on the electoral roll from today.

People have until 30 April 2020 to register on the new electoral roll, but are being encouraged by the States to sign up online now.

Doing so only takes a few minutes. If you were previously registered on the roll, you still need to sign up as your registration will not carry over from the previous election. 

Registrar-General of Electors Adrian Lewis said there is "a lot to do still to prepare for the 2020 General Election", but that this marks an important step in the lead-up to the first-ever island-wide election. 

"Whenever an entirely new electoral process is introduced there are challenges, but there are opportunities too," he said. "This is an electoral system that the island chose through the referendum, and we’re hoping that will motivate the community to sign up, to engage in the democratic process and to deliver a very high turn out on the day of the election itself."

The dedicated website - election2020.gg - also provides details of who is eligible to vote, how they can cast their vote, and how the election will work. Further information will be added to the website over the coming months as more progress is made in finalising the details of the election process.

On election2020.gg, people can also find information on the convenience of postal voting, which can be applied for at the same time as registering on the electoral roll, and information on standing for election.

From today, people can also register by way of a Household Registration Form which is being delivered to all Guernsey households. 

This form comes with a freepost return envelope and allows multiple registrations per household. The electoral roll will remain open until the 30 April. 

To be eligible to vote you need to be 16 years old by 17 June 2020 and have been resident in the Island for 2 years continuously, or for 5 years if you have left the island and returned.
