'Red list' travellers will have to stay at quarantine hotel first

Monday 15 February 2021

Anyone travelling to Guernsey from Portugal, South Africa and other countries on the UK's 'red list' will have to quarantine twice, following severe new travel requirements.

From today, people arriving in England who have visited a 'red list' country in the last 10 days will need to quarantine for at least 10 days in a managed hotel at their own cost.

They will also need to take a Covid-19 test on or before day 2, and on or after day 8 of their quarantine. Anyone who returns a positive test with have to quarantine for another 10 days, again at their own cost.

At present, people can only travel if they first obtain an 'essential travel permit', which can be granted for compassionate reasons, starting essential work and medical reasons, along with other specified 'essential' reasons.

At the time of writing, Portugal is the only European country on the list, which also features South Africa. The current list can be found in full HERE.

Pictured: The stringent new requirements will make it prohibitive for anyone to come to Guernsey from a place on the 'red list' - such as Madeira, pictured above - even if Guernsey's own border restrictions were to be loosened.

When travellers get to Guernsey, having been to one of these 'banned' countries, they will still have to compete mandatory 14-day self-isolation - and another 14 days if travelling on to one of the other islands of the Bailiwick.

There are no changes to the arrangements for people travelling from the Bailiwick to the UK.
