Fire fighters called to town bars

Tuesday 21 January 2020

The Red empire faced a fire this evening, with smoke seen billowing from the building which houses three of the chain's eateries and bars.

The Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service was called to the fire in St Peter Port at 19:00, initially telling the media that the incident was at Tinto, behind Red.

It was described as a "kitchen fire" at the gin and tapas bar.

However, eye witnesses said the fire appeared to be in the part of the property where Red is - the steak restaurant and cocktail bar. It stretches between the sea front and the Pollet.

Next door, and upstairs, is Rosso, a pizza place, while the new cheese and wine bar called Rouge which opened at Christmas 2019 is across the road from Tinto in the Pollet.

It's not the first time the popular group of bars and restaurants has suffered a fire.

In July 2018, the emergency services were called out after a fire started in the vent between Red and Rosso.

During that emergency response, both facilities remained open with the cocktails flowing in Red as diners continued feasting on pizza and steaks.

No one was hurt in the July 2018 incident.

We are waiting for further details on the incident this evening, as the fire and rescue service were still in attendance at the time this article was published.
