Teams will compete for the prestigious Guernsey Gold Cup as part of a three-race power boating championship in July.
The Guernsey Powerboat Association has announced that the overall winner of the Guernsey race event, which runs from 5 -7 July, will be presented with the trophy, which is owned by the Fattorini family.
The idea of the Guernsey Gold Cup was conceived during a chance conversation between Edward Fattorini and Richard Ridout. Guernsey had been awarded the Class One World Championship for 1988 and they thought there should be a suitable trophy made to mark the event—something to rival the famous Harmsworth Trophy for powerboats first presented in 1903.
The first winners were the Toleman Twins in their boat Propellor Shirts in 1987 and in the following years it was won by Roger Fletcher in Follet Cars (1988), Chris Scragg (1989) and Roger Fletcher again in 1990, on the condition that the Gold Cup should never leave the island.
It has also been competed for more recently -in 2013 it was won by “Warpath” driven by Daryl Grady of the USA. it was presented to Jeremy Gibson, driver of ‘y Knott', for his outstanding performance during the 2014 World 3A and B championships.
Entries for this year's Guernsey race event will open in due course and an advance notice will be published within the next two weeks.
