How should the island support its natural habitat?

Saturday 15 August 2020

A Q&A forum will be held on Monday night so that people can ask questions and offer their views on the States' newly-launched Strategy for Nature.

The event will take place at Les Cotils from 19:30 - 21:00 on Monday. It will wrap up the first public engagement sessions for the strategy, which has included drop-in sessions and informational displays at the Guilles-Alles Library and Beau Sejour.

The Strategy for Nature provides a framework for how Guernsey can look after its natural environment, which is in decline according to data gathered by the States. The three primary goals of the strategy are to connect the island community with nature, care for nature to ensure its diversity and resilience, and to foster and share knowledge about nature.

“The more Guernsey supports and protects nature, the more we can ensure a healthy and resilient natural environment and sustainable economy, society and environment for future generations,” said a spokesperson for the States. “These goals will need to be adopted by the whole community for it to be successful.”

However, some people have questioned whether the States has shown joined-up thinking on this strategy, with many citing the island's planning policies and the number of approved applications for development on greenfield sites.

Alongside the Strategy for Nature, Environment & Infrastructure has developed the Climate Change Policy Letter and Action Plan 2020-2050, the goals of which are lined-up with this strategy.
