Employment and Social Security is seeking a “wide range of views” on age discrimination as it pushes forward with the second phase of the Prevention of Discrimination Ordinance.
The first phase was enacted on 1 October 2023 and offered protections on the grounds of race, disability, carer status, sexual orientation and religion and belief.
The Committee is now looking to extend the Ordinance to protect from discrimination on the grounds of age, and incorporate the grounds covered in existing Sex Discrimination Ordinance.
“Age, as a protected ground, is in some ways different to other protected grounds covered by the legislation. That means that specific policy considerations are required to make sure that appropriate and practical protections are in place, while ensuring that legislation only prohibits genuinely harmful treatment,” said the Vice-President of ESS, Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez.
“It is important that we obtain a wide range of views from across the community. We are hopeful that stakeholders will engage with this process and are grateful for their time and input.”
The consultation period ends on 30 September 2024.
