Public health warnings for the TikTok generation

Thursday 02 April 2020

With thousands of people now using apps like TikTok and Snapchat to communicate, the States of Guernsey have jumped on board to try and get public health messages across to users amid the growing corona virus pandemic.

You might not yet see Deputy Gavin St Pier lip-syncing along with Holly H*, but instead one of our local super heroes has been asked to star in the States' first videos and stories.

One of the island's Occupational Therapists can be seen on TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram as well as the States longstanding Facebook and Twitter feeds, washing her hands in time to 'Move Your Feet' by Junior Senior.

While most social media apps have a minimum user age of 13, many are utilised more by younger people than older.

That is the age group the States are trying to reach with their latest efforts to remind people to wash their hands, and to stay at home.

The largest age group using Snapchat as an example, is in the 18-24 bracket while only 2% of users are over 55.

TikTok is one of the largest growing social media sites, with more than 14million users in the USA alone. Of its users across the world, 66% are under the age of 30.

A third of all internet users between the ages of 30 and 49 use Instagram according to data analysis sources, while one study claims 17% of teenagers cite Instagram as their most important social media platform, and 90% of all its users across the world are under 35.

Facebook is used by an older audience with American statistics suggesting seven in 10 adults are members, and that 84% of people over 30 who use the internet have an account.

40% of U.S. adults who use Twitter are said to be aged between 18 and 29, with  27% between 30 and 49, and 15% are 50.

*For those not familiar with Holly H, she is a young woman from Guernsey who is one of the most followed celebrities on TikTok.
