Provisional license issue resolved

Tuesday 28 July 2020

Learner motorcyclists who were unable to renew their provisional licenses during lockdown will be able to do so retrospectively following a change in the law.

Environment & Infrastructure has amended the driving licence legislation to allow the Committee, in certain circumstances, to renew motorcycle provisional licence that have expired.

It also extends the period in which a provisional licence holder can do a repeat motorcycle training course.

This comes after some learner motorcyclists were unable to renew their provisional motorcycle licences, or to comply with the legislative requirements stipulated to validate those licences, as a result of the recent Covid-19 restrictions.

Following this amendment, the Committee has agreed that any provisional motorcycle licence that expired between the 1 March 2020 and 30 June can now be renewed, and a repeat motorcycle training course completed, up until and including the 31 October 2020.

In addition, where a provisional licence was previously renewed between 1 March 2020 and 30 June 2020, and where the licence holder was then unable to complete a repeat motorcycle training course, it has been agreed that the holder can recommence riding immediately and has until 31 October 2020 in which to complete their motorcycle training course.

Anyone who wants to renew a motorcycle licence that expired between those dates is asked to contact Driver and Vehicle Licensing on 243400 or via email at dvl@gov.gg for details on how to reapply.
