Work to tackle invasive Sour Fig will allow other plants to establish near Beaucette Marina.
The Guernsey Conservation Volunteers’ working party was at the site on Wednesday and returns tomorrow [Saturday 25 March], with people welcome to join them.
“‘Our 2023 Big Sour Fig Project got off to an excellent start on Wednesday with 14 people removing Sour Fig,” said Andrea Salmon, GCV Operations Director.
“It’s very satisfying pulling up this invasive plant and the first of two skips was full within 30 minutes. We’re looking forward to removing all the Sour Fig from this site near Beaucette Marina during 2023 and seeing the native plants regrow.”
The group are removing Sour Fig along the coastal area between Fort Doyle and Beaucette Marina.
The work will begin at 10am. Anyone over the age of 16 can help out.
They will return on Monday 8 May, as part of The Big Help Out for the King’s Coronation.
GCV first removed Sour Fig in 2008 with a successful pilot project at Fort Pezeries.
Other invasive non-native plants being tackled by the group include Cape Ivy and Three-cornered Garlic (Stinking Onions).
Botanical surveys have shown that more than 60 native plant species can regrow on sites where Sour Fig previously.
