Programme finalised for inaugural Havelet Regatta

Thursday 24 August 2023

Organisers of the Havelet Regatta hope the whole area will be buzzing with activity.

The inaugural regatta takes place on Sunday 3 September from 10:00 to 18:00.

The committee bringing it together has now finalised the programme which is intended to appeal to islanders of all ages and abilities, providing a day of free activities to watch and take part in.

Committee member, Leonie Damsell said: "The timing of this event is perfect as it follows the West and North shows and is the last Sunday before schools go back.  This gives the opportunity for youngsters to burn off energy and get creative, all for free.  We hope that the sea, the beach and the street will be buzzing with activity.”

Music will be provided by James Dumbleton & Catioroc, Kiya Ashton, GU10 and the Button Pushers.

There will be a variety of food and drink on offer.

Odette Duerden, the event founder said: "The bay is a natural amphitheatre making viewing of events really easy and it's compact, so people can go from one area to another quickly and easily.

“We've given a lot of thought to accessibility, particularly as all funds raised go to the Guernsey Cheshire Home, who do wonderful work for islanders with significant physical disability. There will be something for everyone.”

The Regatta will have a zone for various arts and crafts, another for traditional games and beach activities such as sandcastle building, “rollerball” and races including beach stilts. Sailing, water polo, rowing and swimming will be out on the water.

There will also be two unique team events - a Fun Swim-Run and Office Chair Racing.

These are not designed to be particularly competitive but there will be trophies for first places and for “best-dressed”.

Rob Shepherd, Chairman of The Guernsey Cheshire Home said: “We are grateful to the main sponsor, Voyonic without whom this event would not happen.  We would encourage islanders to get down to Havelet, enjoy the atmosphere, take part where possible and support the Home with donations. We hope that the Regatta will become a part of the annual island calendar in the same way as the Boxing Day Dip.”
