Indications of community seeding in Sark

Saturday 14 August 2021

Two people in Sark have tested positive for Covid-19.

On Thursday, it was confirmed that at least seven visitors to Sark last Saturday [7 August] had subsequently tested positive for the virus in Guernsey.

Guernsey Public Health Services advised Sark's Government to carry out surge testing for staff working in "the several local establishments" that the group visited.

However, Sark's Pandemic Emergency Committee says these cases "were not identified as part of surge testing", indicating they are the result of community seeding.

The PEC then added: "The contact tracing process, which is ongoing, has established a possible connection. Contact tracing will now proceed to establish if there are any further direct contacts."

The Sark Medical team are "working very closely "with the Guernsey authorities. The contact tracing process means anyone who should be tested as a result of the new cases will be contacted directly and does not need to request a test themselves, unless they are symptomatic.

"I am not recommending any additional measures as a result of todays cases in Sark," said Dr Nicola Brink last night.

"We are seeing community cases across the Bailiwick as expected. The numbers remain relatively low and are not growing in the exponential way we saw in earlier waves. But continuing to follow that good practice is really important in ensuring we continue to manage Covid-19 effectively as a community.
