A civilian helicopter will be stationed at Port Soif carpark at night, while the runway at Guernsey Airport closes for essential repairs.
The runways in Guernsey and Alderney will close later this month while specialist contractors undertake planned maintenance – “contingency plans have been put in place to provide medical air transfers (medevac) for Bailiwick residents,” said the States of Guernsey.
Alderney Airport will close between 18 and 26 April, and Guernsey Airport will close between 24 April and 1 May.
While the airports will remain open in the day, both will close overnight, meaning alternative landing sites for medevacs have been arranged.
In Alderney, helicopters carrying critically ill patients won’t land at the airport, but either at Les Butes or Braye Common, while in Guernsey the alternative chosen site is Port Soif car park.
The runways have been closed for essential maintenance, with pavement specialists Amco-Giffen brought over to “carry out essential patch repairs on the runway” in Alderney, while routine maintenance is carried on Guernsey Airport's air lighting system.
“The team involved in the advanced planning would like to thank islanders for their understanding while these alternative measures are in place and to respectfully ask them to avoid these landing sites while they are in use,” said Resilience and Planning Officer, Terry Coule.
Port Soif carpark will be closed between 20:00 and 07:00 on 24 April through to 1 May.
The States said security arrangements will be in place overnight while the helicopter is there.
