Charity picks up the initiative with Boxing Day beach clean

Tuesday 22 December 2020

The Clean Earth Trust is inviting islanders to take part in a family friendly, festive community beach clean this Boxing Day.

The event will conclude at Cobo Bay by 10:30, so islanders hoping to take part in the Cheshire Home’s Boxing Day Swim will be able to participate in both.

“We see beach cleaning as having so many benefits,” said Helen Quin from the Clean Earth Trust.

“Removing waste and contamination from our marine environment and coastal shores are the obvious priority, and we will be looking closely at and recording what we find.

“It’s also an important time of year to plant seeds of individual responsibility, and think about how we can make small changes to live more sustainable lives as we enter a new year.”

The clean will start at Port Soif at 9:00 on 26 December, when people will be briefed and given a beach cleaning kit, which includes a bucket, pair of gloves, and a litter picker. The team will walk along the shores of Port Soif and Grandes Rocques along to Cobo Bay. There will be drop-off points at both Cobo and Port Soif for the kits and collected litter.

“Beach cleaning is a chance for people to come together with a common goal, stretch their legs, embrace the fresh air and help offset their Christmas lunch,” said Ms Quin.

“We have timed the beach clean to make sure that those wanting to attend the sea swim can attend both events and make a morning of it. We do hope everyone packs their bathers and jumps in with us at the end!”

Those who are interested in joining the Clean Earth Trust for the Boxing Day Beach Clean are asked to register for the event on Eventbrite, or alternatively to email hello@cleanearthtrust.org.
