Police Inspector retires

Monday 30 November 2020

Inspector Andrew Whitton is retiring after more than 20 years of service with Bailiwick Law Enforcement.

His Guernsey career began in 1998, after he was seconded to the island's police force from Avon and Somerset. In 2001, he made the decision to move here permanently.

Within a year he was part of the Criminal Investigation Department and had earned his first Chief Officer's Commendation. Following a promotion and a brief time in uniformed operations, Mr Whitton ran the CID as Detective Sergeant in 2005, assisting with two murder investigations and receiving another two Chief Officer's Commendations.

From here his career took a number of different paths, including work in Commercial Fraud and External Affairs, becoming an accredited Financial Investigator, leading the Professional Standards Department and, becoming a Tactical Firearms Commander in 2015.

Most recently, Mr Whitton took over responsibility for Neighbourhood Policing as well as becoming becoming a qualified Senior Identification Manager with regards to Disaster Victim Identification. This meant that he held six distinct responsibilities at the time of his retirement, including being the Operational Inspector for the entire Bailiwick.

"My time with Guernsey Police has been long and enjoyable, and it has been a privilege to work alongside my colleagues," said Mr Whitton.

"While I am looking forward to retirement, I will miss the daily challenge having been a Special Constable and a regular officer for nearly 38 years. Policing is in my blood."
