Pick it up!

Friday 31 May 2019

'Wombles' have been out collecting cigarette butts all week as part of a campaign to highlight the litter problem on World No Smoking Day, and they're now being collated into a display outside the Tourist Information Centre.

Organised by Andrew Munro, butts have been picked up from across the Bailiwick by himself and other volunteers who want to clean up the islands.

Mr Munro wombled from 'dawn till dusk' yesterday while other people picked up butts in Alderney, Herm and Sark so their contributions could be shipped into St Peter Port ahead of today to join the display.

Anyone else who has any cigarette butts can also drop theirs off to the Tourist Information Centre which will be manned all day.

Mr Munro has also arranged some competitions, which have been sponsored by Ravenscroft which include a £100 prize for the most butts collected in one of two categories: schools, not for profit organisations and individuals, and corporate teams.

A number of staff from the Department of Health and other businesses are taking part in activities to collect and collate the butts, including from Ogier, Waitrose Admiral Park, TISE and the Guernsey Recycling Group.

Projects Officer for Guernsey Recycling, Fran Browning, is spending today wombling between the Bridge and Bordeaux, while Deputy Jennifer Merrett is going on a wombling session around the Bridge tonight. Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez is also planning to collect more cigarette butts.
