Petit Train to provide 'park and ride'

Thursday 10 December 2020

The Petit Train will be running a free shuttle service from Sir Charles Frossard House to Piquet House for the remaining two late-night shopping evenings.

The States building's car park has been opened up for public parking on Thursday evenings this month, however for some it might be too far to walk, which has given Petit Train Owner and Driver Andy Furniss the idea to chart a new route.

"While nowhere is far in Guernsey, the walk to Town from Charles Frossard House can be a bit of a trek, especially when you’ve got your hands full of Christmas goodies," he said.

"Victor (the Petit Train) is all decked out in his festive attire, adorned with lights, and I will be playing some Christmas tunes to get travellers feeling merry."

The shuttle service - which starts at 17:45 and ends at 21:00 - has been funded by the Guernsey Retail Group, which hopes the service will encourage people to spend their money in the High Street in the run-up to Christmas.

Last week's late-night shopping was hit by torrential rain, however retailers are hopeful that the elements will be in their favour tonight.

"The first late-night shopping is always the quietest and last week the weather wasn’t on our side, but the fact that so many people still ventured into town was fantastic," said Paperchase Manager Benjamin Mansell.

"The Guernsey Together spirit is still going strong and islanders are doing their best to support local retailers where they can this year.

"Luckily this week the weather looks like it’s going to be on our side, so we hope to see more people coming to town and leaving full of Christmas cheer."

Among the festivities on offer in Town tonight will be carols and Christmas music in the Town Church, which will be performed by Elizabeth College’s music students.
