Record number stand in parish election

Thursday 29 October 2020

The St Peter Port parish elections are set to be hotly contested this year, with a record number of candidates standing, following the high turnout for the first island-wide election.

14 people have been nominated for eight official parish positions - ten of whom are standing for the douzenier roles.

Senior Constable Dennis Le Moignan suggested that the turnout reflected the mindset of the Guernsey public following the recent General Election.

“The election heightened awareness of Guernsey’s community as whole,” he said. “More, as a result, have a vested interest in the running of the parish and how they can contribute. What better way than standing for your Douzaine?”

The parish is seeking five new Douzeniers in the election, as well as one Junior Constable (serving for only one year), one member of the Amherst and Vauvert Infants & Junior Schools’ Committee, and one member of the Baubigny Schools’ Committee.

The parish team’s responsibilities include the administration of waterways and roadside hedges, collecting parish rates, support for refuse and recycling collection, and advising the States of Guernsey on matters pertaining to licensed drinking, entertainment and betting establishments.

Candidates will have an opportunity to introduce themselves on 4 November, at the parish meeting held in the Cambridge Room of Beau Sejour at 19:30.

The actual election is likely to be held on 18 November.
