Pan island cultural celebration planned

Wednesday 12 June 2024

This summer, the Bailiwick will host our Duc for the first time in nearly 20 years, with King Charles III due to visit Guernsey in July.

His mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II last visited the island in 2005, for the 60th anniversary of Liberation Day, when she was 79 years old.

His Majesty has been over more recently, while he was Prince of Wales, but this summer's visit is the first scheduled since he became our Monarch - known as Notre Duc in the Channel Islands.

King Charles has previously visited the Bailiwick on four occasions - all during his long tenure as Prince of Wales.

Three of his trips were registered as official visits, while one was a more private occasion.

His first visit came in 1976, and was the 'unofficial' one.

The then-Prince Charles was Commander of the Minesweeper HMS Bronnington at the time. He sailed into St Peter Port, and spent most of his time in the island aboard his ship, but he is reported to have spent a couple of hours windsurfing at Pembroke Bay.

He also attended a Vin d'Honneur at the Royal Court House and an evening dinner at Government House before departing our waters.

By this time, His Majesty was styled as The Prince of Wales, having been bestowed the title by his mother in 1969.

His Majesty's second visit to the Bailiwick, and his first official visit, came in 1995.

The-then Prince of Wales spent the 50th anniversary of Liberation Day in Guernsey where he unveiled the Liberation Monument at the Weighbridge in St Peter Port.

He read a message from his mother, Queen Elizabeth II before visiting Sark where he stayed overnight.

It's understood that he caused a stir the following morning, when he rose early and went for a walk without anyone knowing.

His Majesty's third visit to the Bailiwick was twenty years ago, in June 2004.

He arrived at Guernsey Airport in an aircraft of the Royal Squadron before attending an affirmation of allegiance at Beau Sejour.

He also visited Candie Museum where he viewed a selection of original Royal Charters, before returning to Beau Sejour for a multi-media presentation titled 'B404 – Tracing the Origins of Guernsey Today' created by school children.

Adverse weather conditions almost forced the cancellation of a trip to Herm, but His Majesty insisted on going. He took a walk around the island escorted by Herm's then manager, Adrian Heyworth, before meeting residents, and visiting St Tugual’s Church and the Island School.

King Charles' most recent visit to the Bailiwick was in 2012 when he spent time in Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, and Herm. He was accompanied by his wife, the-then Duchess of Cornwall on this visit.

Their two-day tour of the Bailiwick started with a visit to Saumarez Park where more than 400 11 year olds from local primary schools were taking part in a variety of activies as part of a Youth Showcase.

The Royal couple also met the winners of the Queen's cup from the Guernsey Royal Agricultural Show and some Guernsey Golden Goats whilst the Duchess of Cornwall met representatives from the Guernsey Adult Literacy Project. Their Majesties visited the Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden before heading to Les Burgs Hospice for its official opening.

They had a private lunch at Government House before an allegiance ceremony at Castle Cornet.

Later in the day they visited Herm via helicopter, before spending the night at Government House, including a private dinner with His Excellency, Peter Walker the Lieutenant Governor at the time.

The following day, the Royal couple visited Sark and Alderney where they met island dignataries and members of the public, and toured gardens and other amenities before returning to the UK.

This week it's been confirmed Their Majesties will be back in Guernsey on Tuesday 16 July where a pan-island celebration is planned including residents of Sark and Alderney.

Time pressures mean they won't be able to visit each of the islands so representatives will come to Guernsey instead, including politicians, civil servants, and school children.

King Charles III and his Queen Consort will be in Jersey the day before, Monday 15 July.
