Ormer survey rescheduled for today

Sunday 04 March 2018

Members of La Société Guernesiaise will be spending this afternoon looking for ormers near Lihou island so they can count how many of them there are.

It's part of the group's regular work to survey the island's stock of ormers, which had to be rescheduled due to the recent poor weather conditions.

The Marine Biology Section has organised today's survey and is asking anyone who wants to take part to meet in the Lihou island car park at 13:00. There will be a short briefing before the group walks down to the water's edge.

From there, those taking part will follow the tide down to its lowest point, looking for ormers as they go, before following the tide back up the shoreline.

The number of ormers found on Guernsey's coastline is a matter of much concern with strict rules over when they can be harvested. There are size limits as well to ensure only ormers of the appropriate size are collected, Anyone flouting the rules for ormering can be fined.

There are only a limited number of days each year when the delicacies can be harvested, which includes Friday 2 - Sunday 4 March with further ormering tides later this month and during April.
