Opening hours to change as green waste site moves

Wednesday 20 March 2024

Operating hours at the garden waste drop off site will change when it moves to the Mont Cuet landfill.

The transition away from the current location comes as part of the new quarrying activities by Ronez at Chouet headland.

The Chouet site will close its doors for the last time on 2 April at 16:00, with the new one opening the following morning at 10:00.

"The new opening times are intended to align with customer demand which reflects the seasons," said Guernsey Waste Operations Manager Sarah Robinson.

"The new operating times will give islanders the chance to access the green waste site after working hours in the summer months and on Sunday afternoons and Bank Holidays."

"As a result, we have reduced the opening times during the winter to keep operating costs down while remaining open at the busier times."

Currently the green waste site is open from 08:00 to 16:00 Monday to Saturday and 08:00 to 12:00 on Sundays year round.

This will shift to seasonal arrangements.

From when it launches in its new location up to 26 October, the site will be shut on Thursdays and open from 10:00 to 18:00 for the rest of the week.

Then from 27 October for the winter, it will only be open on Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 10:00 to 16:00.

The new site is smaller than the one it replacements so needs to be cleared each morning before it is available to the public.

Guernsey Waste is also encouraging alternatives to using the site.

"Rather than rely on the drop-off facility for all their garden waste, islanders are encouraged to compost at home," said Guernsey Waste Minimisation & Sustainability Officer Douglas Button.

This push for at-home composting reflects a move to lessen the dependency on waste facilities while meaning households get the benefits of nutrient-rich compost for their gardens.

Subsidised composting kits are available from garden centres for £10.

People will still be able to take soil conditioner from the new site for free.
