Move to preserve Guernsey's crafts

Thursday 06 October 2022

The National Trust wants to gauge people's interest in learning traditional Guernsey crafts - starting with making crab pots.

The Trust has arranged for Max Gaudion, an expert in making traditional wicker crab pots, to put on a course teaching the skill to others.

"We approached Max and proposed the idea that if the Trust provided the venue and underwrote the cost, would he be willing to teach interested islanders how to hand make traditional wicker crab pots?" said Mike Brown, the Trust's newly-elected President.

"If this course is of interest, the Trust will be willing to organise further courses teaching other traditional skills.

"A large portion of the Trust mandate is the preservation of the island‘s culture and heritage.

"Demonstrating traditional crafts at Le Viaër Marchi is interesting and popular, but is more illustrative rather than real preservation. To preserve these crafts, it is essential that a younger generation learns these skills or they could be lost within a generation."

The Trust needs expressions of interest from people who would consider enrolling on the short course, for which it will provide the venue free of charge.

"It is anticipated that the crab pot making course will run over a weekend - Friday night, all day Saturday and all day Sunday," said Mr Brown.

"It cannot run over a longer period as the wicker need to be kept damp and supple.

"As yet, we are unable to give an indication of cost as we will need to source the wicker, the price of which depends on the quantity ordered.

"Initially, we require expressions of interest to enable us to properly cost the course and schedule with Max’s availability."
