Public presentations to be held on future of education

Sunday 23 May 2021

Two public presentations are being held on the future of Secondary and post-16 education at Les Beaucamps and Les Varendes.

It follows the announcement that the Education, Sport and Culture Committee do not want to rebuild La Mare De Carteret after investigations indicated it would cost £30m more than redeveloping the Grammar School site.

ESC’s proposals instead focus on Les Varendes (the Grammar School site) becoming an 11-16 school alongside both St Sampsons and Les Beaucamps, with the inevitable closure of LMDC.

ESC has now announced two public presentations to explain their plans to the public. However, teachers and parents of LMDC students will have to travel to see these presentations at either Les Beaucamps or Les Varendes, as LMDC will not be getting one.

The first presentation will take place between 19:30 - 21:30 on Wednesday 26 May at Les Beaucamps School Hall. This presentation will also be live streamed via the States of Guernsey Facebook page for people who cannot attend or would rather view it remotely.

A second public presentation will be held the following night, on Thursday 27 May, between 18:00 and 20:00 at Les Varendes (Grammar School) Hall. Both sessions will include a question and answer session.

“In recent weeks we have focused much of our attention on engagement with staff,” said ESC President Andrea Dudley-Owen.

“We are committed to offering the same opportunity to the wider community. The two public presentations next week will provide anyone who is interested with an opportunity to hear directly from the Committee about our plans before the policy letter is published on 28 May,” she said.

“The school halls at Les Beaucamps and Les Varendes will hopefully provide plenty of space if people want to attend in person.”
