New security features operational at Guernsey Airport

Wednesday 24 August 2022

Works to upgrade the hold baggage system and central search area at Guernsey Airport have now been completed.

The upgrades - which started during Easter - were carried out to maintain regulatory compliance and improve the passenger experience for those travelling out of the island, according to Guernsey Ports.

The screening of hold baggage has been updated to the latest standard, mirroring international aviation security standards.

New cabin baggage scanners have also been installed, including a footwear scanner which will not require most passengers to remove their shoes.

This new equipment has been soft launched to enable security services staff to complete training whilst fine-tuning of the new equipment and procedures is completed.

Guernsey Ports’ Head of Passenger Operations and Aviation Security, Steve Langlois, said that the upgrades were necessary because of increasing security demands across the world.

“That inevitably impacts on us in Guernsey, if we want to retain access to domestic and international travel networks,” he said.

“Continued investment in our security assets is essential to improve the experience for our passengers and to ensure Guernsey Airport remains open, safe and secure, both now and in the future.”

Mr Langlois also acknowledged the efforts and understanding of the public while the works were carried out.

“I would like to thank the programme team and our service partners for ensuring a smooth and successful delivery of these vital upgrades. Most of all, I wish to thank the travelling public for their patience during what has been an extended period of disruption,” he added.

“These upgrades will deliver a range of improvements to the passenger experience and the working environment of our security staff, all of which should be particularly evident at peak times.”
