New school names and uniforms not until September 2020

Thursday 20 December 2018

Throughout the next school term Education will be speaking to students and other stakeholders about what they will name the two new school sites, and what uniforms the pupils will wear.

ESC President Deputy Matt Fallaize has written a letter to parents and carers updating them on the plans to move from the current selective secondary schools system to the one school model.

In that letter, he told parents when they would hear about any new names and uniforms. He also said the schools would have their new names and uniforms in September 2020, at the start of that school year.

This is all following on from the announcement that the school will operate across two sites: St Sampsons High and Les Beaucamps High.

"Changes to uniforms will begin to take effect from September 2020 and parents and others will be provided with at least one year’s notice of such changes." - Deputy Matt Fallaize, President of Education, Sport & Culture.

"You will appreciate that there are a number of practical issues to take into account as we move to one school operating in two 11-18 colleges. These include changes to school uniforms and determining the future names of the school and its two constituent colleges," Deputy Fallaize said.

"In making such changes we wish to provide parents, students and the wider community with as much notice as possible and to introduce them efficiently and cost effectively."

Two of these key changes which have already been at the forefront of people's minds surround both uniforms and the names of the sites. While some have recommended the sites keep their current names, others have said that would not be fair on the students coming from La Mare de Carteret or the Grammar. Entirely new uniforms for all students are also on the cards.

Deputy Fallaize said nothing would changing before July 2020 (the end of that school year), and also assured parents will be given at least one years notice of such changes. No decisions have been made yet he said, with consultation set to take place to get everyone's views.

"Throughout the next school term (Spring 2019) we will be talking to students and other stakeholders to take into account their views about the names of the new school and its two colleges, the design of the new uniform and the extent to which the uniform should differ between the two colleges. Details of this engagement will be provided early in the New Year and future changes to uniforms and school/college names will be announced in the summer of 2019 or before," he added.

"If there are additional costs incurred as a result of making changes to school uniforms, we will consider whether there are ways for us to reduce this impact on families as much as possible."

The transition model provides for Year 7 intakes on two sites only from September 2021. The two 11-18 colleges will be largely established by September 2022 and fully established by September 2023.

These changes require extensions to the existing school buildings at Baubigny and Les Beaucamps. Proposals for this capital investment will be laid before the States in the summer of 2019.

Deputy Fallaize said anyone who had questions about the programme could contact the Education Office at educationfuture@gov.gg or by phone on 733084.
