New ping-pong bar opens on the Quay

Friday 28 June 2019

Pinguay has opened on the Quay in St Peter Port with the new business adding to the "buzz" surrounding the area and catering to sports and music fans.

Businessman Simon Allum opened the bar last week in the premises of the former Mirror Bar close to Le Nautique along the seafront.

With a ping-pong table on the upper floor and seating downstairs the bar looks to offer something different to the island's nightlight scene and casual daytime customers.

According to the owner, who previously ran The White Hart and Cornerstone pubs, business has already been booming with locals enthusiastic about the idea of a sports dedicated bar with quality DJs and drinks selection.

"The idea sort of came from a bar in London called Bounce, we're not basing it on the table tennis but we've put the table in as a novelty for Guernsey. We've had people coming in every day so far, it's been really busy, it's strangely addictive," he said.

With one bar already stocked on the ground floor with draught beers from both breweries - including Breda - as well as a sommelier wine list and spirits, another bar is hoping to be opened up in the coming weeks.

"We didn't want to do a cocktail list as we wanted to do something different for the area, that could have gotten lost in this area with so much of that already on offer," he said.

DJ "Oneofakind" Andre de Carteret has already been booked to play an eclectic mix of funk and soul on weekends as he has been known to do regularly at top spots all over the country.

"It's becoming a bit of a strip round here, it's great to be able to sit and watch the boats bob around on the harbour rather than sitting looking out at other buildings in the High Street," said Mr Allum.

Opening hours are 11:00-late  Monday - Saturday and 12:00-18:00 on a Sunday.
