New initiative aims to serve up seafront enhancements through al fresco dining

Friday 30 April 2021

A new walkway will be created this summer between Mora Restaurant and the Pier Steps in order to serve up more al fresco dining along the seafront.

In a trial project announced today, a section of the Town Quay footpath is set to become a hub of outdoor eating, with the unloading bays outside Gusto, Pingquay, Balthazar and Mora making way so that pedestrians can be diverted around the al fresco space.

Economic Development President Neil Inder said the initiative, if formally approved, would support businesses who have struggled through the pandemic.

“The revitalisation of Town is one of the key aims of the Committee for Economic Development," he said. "This proposal for al-fresco dining fully aligns with this aim, whilst also providing valuable additional trading opportunities during what has been an extremely difficult time for many businesses.”

It is proposed that the changes will come into play on a trial basis between June and October 2021 in order to test the public's appetite for increased al fresco dining.

A joint statement signed off by the owners of Gusto, Pingquay, Balthazar and Mora said there is a demand from locals and visitors alike for more al fresco opportunities.

“All the businesses involved in the project are excited about the prospect of the enhancement of the Quay," they added, citing a desire to enhance the Town seafront.

Under the proposals, planters will be placed along the side of the northbound traffic in order to protect pedestrians.

The Quay was closed to traffic on numerous weekends last summer, following the island's first lockdown, and Environment & Infrastructure President Lindsay de Sausmarez says better use needs to be made of the seafront.

“The popularity of al-fresco dining along The Quay on Seafront Sundays has highlighted to the Committee the potential to better use of one of Guernsey’s most valuable assets, the Town seafront.

"Working with the businesses in the area, we hope that this initiative will give the public even more reason to use and enjoy The Quay.”
