New info for potential cannabis farmers

Thursday 05 December 2019

New guidelines have been released for businesses interested in starting to grow and process cannabis in Guernsey.

Economic Development and Health & Social Care have worked together to publish the advice to ensure businesses have the latest information.

The document offers guidance on importing and exporting cannabis derived products in and out of the Bailiwick, gives details on the law surrounding the different types of cannabis and also lists useful contacts in the States.

"One of the key aims of the Committee for Economic Development is to diversify and grow Guernsey’s economy and re-affirm that the Island is open for business. The cannabis growing sector is an emerging area where new and innovative medicinal products can be grown and developed within a highly regulated environment in accordance with UK, EU and global standards," Deputy Charles Parkinson said, “the updated guide offers important information for any business that is considering plans to apply for a licence to operate in this sector.”

Deputy Heidi Soulsby added: “Since legislative changes were made earlier this year, there has been considerable interest from individuals and businesses wishing to find out more about the licensing options to grow and process cannabis and cannabis derived products in the Bailiwick. This guide is designed to be a single point of reference for potential applicants, making the application process as straightforward as possible.”

In June 2019, Guernsey introduced a licensing regime which allows the growing and processing of cannabis and cannabis derived products for certain purposes.

Since this change in the law, the States has been approached by several businesses interested in locating and establishing cannabis-related ventures in the island. This has primarily been aimed at producing cannabis derived medicinal products.

The policy guidance can be found at gov.gg/cannabis/licensing.
