New annual fee for all businesses and sole traders handling personal data

Thursday 07 January 2021

Many local businesses have been exempt from registering with the Office of the Data Protection Authority, however from January 2021 this has changed.

All businesses and sole traders who hold any personal data are now legally required to sign up to the ODPA and pay an annual fee.

The ODPA is trying to make sure everyone within the Bailiwick is now aware of these changes and that nobody gets caught out

Organisations with fifty or more staff will need to pay £2,000 per year and all other organisations will need to pay £50.

Charities will need to sign up, but won’t need to pay any fee.

You’ll need to do more than sign up to be compliant with the law. There are a number of things a business or sole trader will need to do to make sure they’re appropriately handling personal data.

You can find a number of resources on how to stay within the law and sign up and pay your fee on the ODPA website.
