National Hillclimb kicks off weekend long motoring festival

Saturday 21 July 2018

If you feel the "need for speed" then the national hillclimb is here to whet your appetite again today.

Visiting drivers from Jersey and the UK will compete alongside Guernsey's own motoring enthusiasts as they tackle Le Val des Terres.

The Avon Tyres/Wynn Developments MSA British Hillclimb Championship is one of the flag ship events on the motoring calendar.

The organiser said it will feature a number of exciting drivers.

"We are pleased to be welcoming the elite drivers and their exceptionally rapid cars from the UK Hillclimb Championship to our shores, to do battle with local drivers and our close neighbours from Jersey in the quest for FTD (Fastest Time of the Day), and a haul of championship points in the Two Championship Top 12 Run offs."

While hill climbs are always well supported in Guernsey, this particular event is known to pull the crowds in with a number of other things to see and do as well.

"At the top of the Val des Terres, we will also be welcoming a fantastic line up of 6 local motor franchise dealers," the organisers said.

They will include Trust Ford, Rabeys, Barras Car Centre, Pauls Motors, Duques and Le Mont Saint. They will be "showcasing a variety of new vehicles from their various dealerships" with a display stretching from the top of Le Val des Terres across to Fort Road.

Following the national hillclimb, on Sunday 22 July, is the Guernsey Motor Festival Seafront Sunday, with hundreds of vehicles expected to take over the St Peter Port sea front. As is normal for a Seafront Sunday the area will all be pedestrianised with all of the participating vehicles either taking part in static displays or organised demonstrations.

Among the events will be the "twisty sprint."
