Parents and carers asked to embrace real nappies

Sunday 25 April 2021

Efforts are being made to promote real nappies, including a ‘nappychino’ for interested parents and carers.

During Real Nappy Week, the Guernsey Real Nappy Network will be celebrating the ever-increasing popularity of real nappies and looking to draw attention to "how easy modern real nappies are to use".

Their efforts have resulted in more families ‘going real’ and a big increase in applications for a £35 'incentive' from Guernsey Waste. The voucher is made available to new or expectant parents in order to reduce the 9,000 disposable nappies that the States says are thrown in the bin every day.

"I love our granddaughter wearing reusable nappies," said GRNN member Sian Ogier. "They are clean and protective and the natural fibers are great for sensitive skin.

"It's great that they are eco friendly and so bright and fun for the child to wear."

Another grandmother, Anne Setters, said there is more to 'real nappies' than tradition alone. "I used real nappies and I am delighted our daughter chose them as well for our four granddaughters," she said.

"They are no bother to use and you know you are saving money and saving the environment."

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the 25th annual ‘Real Nappy Week’ and the Guernsey Real Nappy Network will be hosting a ‘nappychino’ for interested parents and carers to learn more about real nappies in a coffee morning style event.

This will be held at Bright Beginnings Children’s Centre on Tuesday 27 April from 13:00 to 15:30 and again from 18:00 to 20:00.

Information on real nappies and the work of the GRNN will also be displayed at Beau Sejour for the duration of Real Nappy Week. For more information on cloth real nappies or any of the above events please contact the Guernsey Real Nappy Network at guernseyrealnappynetwork@gmail.com or visit their Facebook page ‘Guernsey Nappy Chat’.
