Museums close for winter maintenance

Sunday 03 November 2019

Three of Guernsey Museums sites will be shutting up shop for the winter today, so it is your last chance to see some of the exhibits for this year.

Castle Cornet, Fort Grey and the German Naval Signals HQ are all closing their doors for the winter after what's been described as a 'very successful summer'.

Guernsey Museum at Candie Gardens remains open for a while longer though, as it doesn't shut for its winter rest until 31 December.

As well as the permanent galleries and the Discovery Room at Candie, there are also two temporary exhibitions; Frances Lemmon’s ‘William Le Lacheur’ exhibition is on display in the greenhouse while ‘To Japan and Back Again’, continues in the Brian White Gallery.

There is also the ongoing season of Japanese films running until the 10 December. Tickets are £5 and include entry to the museum before the film.

Castle Cornet and the RGLI Museum at the castle will be open again next week for the annual Remembrance Sunday commemorations, between 10:00 and 15:00. The noon day gun will be fired and members of the public are able to go and watch and visit the museum.

Other events upcoming at Guernsey's Museums include a series of special ‘Candie Christmas’ events which will be held on the first four Sundays of December. Normal admission to the Museum will apply, but Discovery Pass holders get in free.

Full details of what’s on can be found on the Guernsey Museums website – museums.gov.gg.

While Castle Cornet is closed for the winter, work continues to refurbish the roof of the Maritime Museum within its wall.

The museum was closed last year as the roof needed urgent work, and while that is being done the Maritime exhibits are being replaced with a new theme.
