WATCH: Museum season gets underway with a bang!

Saturday 23 March 2019

ESC President Deputy Matt Fallaize has marked the beginning of this year's museum season by firing the first noonday gun of the year.

Castle Cornet, Fort Grey and the German Naval Signal Headquarters re-opened yesterday, after closing for the winter months.

Deputy Fallaize was invited to fire the iconic canon and said it was a "great privilege":

"This is probably the most distinctive daily event that happens in Guernsey. It's the first time I've fired it. I had ear defenders on but even then it's louder than you'd expect!"

The daily event was previously supported by Canon Asset Management, but is now looking for a new sponsor.

"Canon Asset Management have been sponsoring us for a very long time and they’ve decided to move on and do something else but we do thank them for their support over the years," said Visitors Services Officer Rachel McCutcheon.

Ms McCutcheon said there is a lot to look forward to this season: "We have firing every day which is the most popular part of the whole castle experience. We also have living history that starts on 1 April and happens every day, we do daily tours and then we've got our special events as well.

"We've got HistoryFest which is based on past times, there'll be music events and we've got Oddsocks doing 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' which is really popular so look out for the tickets for that.

"We did really well last year. We had slightly bigger numbers again and with visitor numbers overall down that's been really exciting for us to keep bringing them in."

The Fort Grey Shipwreck Museum is also expecting a busy season and will be open between 10:00-16:30 daily.

Whilst out on a kayak tour earlier this week, the Outdoor Guernsey team came across the final positions of the pistons in the MV Prosperity's main engine, tying in with an exhibition at the shipwreck museum:

Meanwhile, the German Naval Signal Headquarters in St Jacques will be open every afternoon between 12:30-16:30 and is hoping for another successful year, after seeing a sharp increase in visitors during 2018.

Admission rates for all Guernsey Museum attractions are published on its website and in the Museums & Castles brochure available from tourist information racks. Discovery Pass holders and accompanying Children are admitted free to all sites.
