Mental Health Professor to give depression talk on Blue Monday

Saturday 19 January 2019

A renowned specialist is taking the opportunity to talk about the science behind depression on what has become known as the 'saddest day of the year' 21 January.

Professor David Nutt is being hosted on the island by Ranvier Health which is currently conducting a trial on the island using the link between depression and sense of taste.

Pro. Nutt is a British neuropsychopharmacologist specialising in the research of drugs that affect the brain and conditions such as addiction, anxiety, and sleep will be in Guernsey next week to talk to healthcare professionals and charities about the treatment of depression.

The Chair of Psychoneuropharmacology at Imperial College London, he will share his fascinating knowledge of the brain science behind the diagnosis and management of depression.

Whichever date it happens to fall on the third Monday of January has been known as the 'saddest day of the year' since the terms was coined in the early 2000's.

In the 1960's scientists observed that people with depression have a reduced sense of taste, 40% of people with major depressive disorders had reported problems with their sense of taste and smell. Ranvier Health hopes their test will provide a painless, same-day test for biological depression likely to benefit from antidepressant treatment.

The sessions with Pro. Nutt which are free to attend will take place at St Pierre Park Hotel but the event is ticketed, they can be found online; for the afternoon session here or for the evening session here.
