Member of the public offers to fly Barnacle Bill home

Thursday 21 December 2023

A member of the public will be flying Barnacle Bill back to Gran Canaria, after the loggerhead turtle was rescued by the GSCPA.

The turtle was washed up after Storm Ciaran. She weighed 800g after a bunch of barnacles were removed from her shell.

She now weighs more than 1,200g and is nearly read to be flown home.

“We have two out of the three parts of the CITES paperwork required and she has an id chip which she also needed thanks to local vet and GSPCA President John Knight,” said GSPCA Manager, Steve Byrne.

“Most importantly we have a very kind islander offer to help fly her to Gran Canaria once her paperwork is all in order with some of our team to make sure she gets there safely.

“We have been told it shouldn’t be long but with Christmas so close it will be likely once that is out of the way.

“A huge thanks to all the kindness offered after the storm and to Barnacle Bill especially the amazing lift she will get when she is ready.”
