Petition calls for ESC President's resignation

Monday 12 August 2019

Hundreds of Guernsey people have signed a petition demanding that Deputy Matt Fallaize resign from his position as Education President.

The online petition, which was only set up last week, claims Deputy Fallaize has "lost the confidence of the public which he should be serving".

The ESC head has been under-fire for the past few weeks after his role in the appointment of a new Head of Curriculum & Standards was revealed.

"Not only is this blatant political interference in recruiting for a non-political role, but it represents bullying tactics of the worst kind," said the founder of the petition. "Needless to say, a bully should not be in charge of our island's education policy.

"ESC has had five Chief Secretaries in the past two years. No wonder, if this is the pressure which they are put under to conform to political fiat."

The petition, entitled 'Matt Fallaize must resign!', asks Deputy Fallaize to "do the honourable thing" and step down from his role.

However, the deputy previously said he had "no intention" of resigning over the email scandal.

"I intend to remain as the President of the committee for as long as the States' Assembly wishes me to," he explained. "I am as committed as ever to leading the reforms to education which my committee was elected to lead last year. We are looking forward to the States debate on our policy letter in September."
